Flaptain Jon's Wedding |

01. The Big DayAlthough not officially an Angeles event, Flaptain Jon Lane invited the Angeles Command Staff (and their spouses) to his and Wendy's wedding on September 5th in Newport Beach, CA. There's lots of great photos to see of this wonderful event.

02. The "famous" groom's cake!Perhaps it would be better to say "infamous". Jon designed the groom's cake to reflect his love of Star Trek. Unfortunately, Jon included so much trademarked material that he had to get a signed permission letter from his friend at Paramount licensing faxed to the bakery before they would make the cake! (No kidding!)

03. The Klingon and Ferengi sideJon used actual typefaces from the various major Star Trek races to include messages on the groom's cake. The Klingons asked: "Where do you keep the chocolate?" (Chocolate is an aphrodesiac for Klingons.) And the Ferengi just wanted to remind Jon and Wendy: "You humans still owe us for this cake."

04. The Romulan and Cardassian sideContinuing the alien messages around the right side of the cake, Jon included a greeting from the Romulan Empire: "The Praetor says hello." And the indignant Cardassians complained: "Hey, why weren't we invited to this wedding?"

05. And the backOn the back, Jon placed well wishes from the Bajorans: "May the Prophets guide you both in you lives together" and the Vulcans: "Live long and prosper" (of course). And Jon even included the Hebrew phrase "Mazel Tov" which, in addition to meaning "good luck" also means "May your planetary influences be favorable."

06. The whole cake as flat artworkThe main image of the cake featured all of the Starfleet chapters Jon has either served on (the U.S.S. Angeles, U.S.S. Avenger, and U.S.S. Constitution) and/or been active with (the U.S.S. Accord, U.S.S. Tai Shan, and U.S.S. Christa McAuliffe). You can ask Jon which ship is which when you see him.

07. Creative table decorationsWith a nautical theme (and a nautical location at the Newport Dunes Resort) and a color scheme of purples and lilacs, the table decorations featured candles, sand, and--of all things--purple seashells!

08. The "real" wedding cakeYes, Jon and Wendy had a traditional wedding cake, too. The groom's cake was for fun (and to have something super chocolate), but the wedding cake was more traditional. It featured a nautical theme (with waves and fishes and seashells) to match the wedding location on the beach. The ducks were a special surprise supplied by Jon (Wendy loves ducks).

09. The Angeles crew on the gazeboBack row, upper step (l-to-r): Engineering Chief Gary, Commanding Officer Janice Willcocks, and First Officer Jennifer Cole. Front row (l-to-r): former Second Officer Terry Bingham, former Chief Medical Officer Ariel Vitali, Counsellor Katie Moss and husband Scott Moss, Chief of Communications Dave Mason, and Ensign Steve.

10. The Captain's TableHere's the crew again at their reception table. The Angeles crew was actually split into two tables to allow for mingling with other Starfleet members and former members who were at the wedding, including current Starfleet Vice-Commander Mark Anbinder and Admiral Alex Rosenzweig. Lots of top brass!

11. And it's official...The Certificate of Marriage was signed by best man David Lane (Jon's brother) and maid of honor Chrissy Stanford (Wendy's sister), as well as by William Scott, the non-denominational minister who officiated at the ceremony.

12. We love you, Gary!Always the bridesmaid, never the bride, Chief Gary shared in the love at Jon and Wendy's wedding...and looked really pretty holding Wendy's bridal bouquet.

13. Happy Couple #1Katie and Scott Moss are one of the Angeles' "old, married couples." They're not really old, but they've been married for longer than the ship has existed, and they've played host to countless Angeles meetings, parties, and events. We love them.

14. Happy Couple #2Ariel Vitali and Terry Bingham found love at an Angeles meeting a few years ago and have been together since. At the beginning of the summer, circumstances necessitated them moving away from southern California to Texas. But they're still our crewmates, we miss them, and we love them.

16. And a happy trio...Jennifer Cole, Dave Mason, and Janice Willcocks are single and available, folks, and waiting to be snatched up! So get in line and start a' courtin'! Lots of love to go around.

17. And the happiest couple...Wendy might not be a Trekkie, and Jon may not be into scrapbooking, but these two special people have indeed met their match, and the love they share was plain to see as they enchanged their marriage vows, danced, laughed, and enjoyed a perfect wedding day and evening with 120 of their friends, family, and loved ones.

18. The entire bridal partyWhile most of these folks aren't really Star Trek fans, there are a few former Starfleet members in attendence. On the far left are Jonathan Pajion (former exec of the U.S.S. Tai Shan) and Mike Shappe (founding member of the U.S.S. Accord). Third and second from the right are former U.S.S. Avenger member Tim Lynch and Mojo, who was once part of the crew of the U.S.S. Christa McAuliffe.

19. LOTS of dancingJon and Wendy hired the Fifth Avenue Orchestra...and they rocked! This eight-piece band featured three lead singers (two women and a man), a keyboardist, guitarist, base player, drummer, and saxophone. They played great dance tunes from the sixties, seventies, eighties, and nineties. People were seldom sitting down for long.

20. Cutting the cakeThere were two cakes to cut, but this is the one everyone wanted to dig into. Chocolate cake with chocolate-raspberry truffle filling and buttercream icing--it was a hit with everyone there...whether or not they were a Trekkie.

21. Jon got creamed! So Wendy said, "You'd better not get any cake on my wedding dress!" and Jon carefully put the first bite of cake into Wendy's mouth, careful not to spill any. Then it was Wendy's turn to feed Jon, and she purposefully missed his mouth and covered his face with frosting! It's gonna be an interesting marriage...

22. Flaptain Jon sits down with the Angeles crewWhen you've got 120 people at your wedding, it's hard to spend time with everybody, but Jon managed to sneak away for a few minutes to hang out with his wonderful U.S.S. Angeles crewmates.

23. A romantic surpriseUnknown to Wendy, Jon took guitar lessons for seven weeks before the wedding, working on perfecting a song by John Denver, "Follow Me", to play for Wendy at the wedding (while the band backed him up). Jon used to play guitar in college, although he was very rusty. But with the pre-wedding lessons, he sounded like a pro, and Wendy was serenaded with a wonderful surprise wedding song.

24. Chief Engineer Truman Capote?Gary Sandridge is truly one-of-a-kind, and we wouldn't have it any other way!

25. Only the beginning...It was a magical day, and Jon and Wendy couldn't have been any happier to share their wedding with so many wonderful friends and family. Now their new life together has just begun, and we wish them all the best...
