Angeles enjoys ride with ‘Captain Marvel’

By Fleet Capt. Dave Mason
WEST HILLS — We cheered as Captain Marvel soared boldly above Earth.
USS Angeles members were impressed with Brie Larson’s portrayal of the superhero when we saw “Captain Marvel” March 9.
Jennifer Cole, Lisa Sobien, Jenny Taylor, Paul Szymborski, Ryan Bondy and his friend Kelly Kwon, and I enjoyed the screening at AMC Fallbrook 7 in West Hills.
The film included, as usual, Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee’s witty cameo and a special opening sequence devoted to Lee, the late co-creator of Marvel heroes.
After the movie, Ryan and Kelly braved a haunted house in Thousand Oaks, while the rest of us dined in the safety of a nearby Chile’s.
There are plot spoilers ahead about “Captain Marvel,” but I’m not giving away too much.
The hero (Larson) is a warrior fighting for the Kree in their interstellar war against a shape-shifting people called the Skrulls. She discovers there’s more to this war and her past than she realized as she meets S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Phil Colson (Clark Gregg) in their younger days during the 1990s.
The well-paced movie combines great acting, writing and effects in a story that helps to set the stage for “Avengers: Endgame,” which the Angeles will see April 27. We’ll view it at Cinemark 18 & XD at the Promenade at the Howard Hughes Center in Los Angeles.
But first, we’ll watch the other Captain Marvel. The DC Comics version made his debut in Whiz Comics No. 1 in 1940 as Billy Batson, a boy who becomes an adult superhero when he yells “Shazam!” and get struck by lightning.
DC Comics now calls the longtime hero “Shazam,” and we’ll see “Shazam!” April 6 at the AMC Rolling Hills 20 in Torrance. Stay tuned for more details.
Movie missions are a regular part of Angeles activities. The best way to learn about them and all our activities is to become a member. Just click on “Join us” at the top of this page. More about our mission to see “Captain Marvel” will appear in the June edition of Angels Flight, our award-winning newsletter that goes to members.
