‘Trek’ actor Carl Held meets with Angeles

By Fleet Capt. Dave Mason
Commanding Officer, USS Angeles
“Star Trek” actor Carl Held gave an impressive talk March 12 at the USS Angeles’ 21st anniversary party at club Founder Janice Willcocks’ home in Palos Verdes Estates.
We had a great time. We saw “Return of the Archons,” the original “Star Trek” series episode in which Carl played Lt. Lindstrom, a sociologist on the mission.
Carl talked about his long and happy marriage to the late Sarah Marshall (guest star in the “Star Trek” episode “The Deadly Years”), whom he praised, and his long career guest-starring in everything from “Perry Mason” to “Daktari.” On the set of the latter, he communicated with and hugged Judy, the chimpanzee.
He also talked about his recurring role on “Falcon Crest.”
He discussed the filming of exterior scenes in “Return of the Archons” on the Sony/Columbia Pictures lot (formerly MGM) in Culver City. He noted that the renewal of “Star Trek” for its second season was announced during filming and that previous, action-based episodes built the fan following for the more cerebral “Return of the Archons.” The episode dealt with humanity vs. machine and the danger of cults.
Guest speakers such as Carl have been a recurring part of the USS Angeles throughout its 21-year history. It’s a perk of belonging to this “Star Trek” club in Los Angeles, the traditional heart of the show’s production. We also go on away missions to filming sites.
