‘Star Trek’ celebrates 50 years

By Fleet Capt. Dave Mason
Sept. 8, 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of “Star Trek,” a franchise that explored today’s social issues through the lens of a brighter tomorrow.
It inspired sayings like “Live long and prosper,” “Beam me up, Scotty” (which was never actually said, at least not those words in that order) and “I’m a doctor, not a (fill in the blank).” The original series was followed by an animated series, four spinoff series and 13 movies.
And the series inspired a culture of merchandise, toys, conventions and “Star Trek” clubs such as the USS Angeles.
We salute “Star Trek,” which premiered on Sept. 8, 1966, with the episode “The Man Trap” and took viewers boldly where they’ve never been before.
