LAS VEGAS — Jonathan Frakes is bringing a fellow “Star Trek: Next Generation” star along for the ride as he directs “The Orville.”
Frakes, who also has directed “Star Trek: Discovery,” is directing an episode in which Marina Sirtis will have a guest role. He was able to get Sirtis cast in the part on the starship series that mixes humor with social commentary.
Frakes, aka Cmdr. Will Riker, talked about the Fox network series as he and Sirtis, aka Counselor/Cmdr. Deanna Troi, appeared at the Official Star Trek Convention at the Rio AIl-Suites Hotel & Casino.
Frakes made a dramatic entrance as he walked down the center aisle of the nearly packed Leonard Nimoy Theater to join Sirtis on stage Aug. 3 before enthusiastic fans.
Several USS Angeles members are at the con. Jackie Freeman, Lisa Sobien and I went to a Karaoke party hosted by Garrett Wang, aka Ensign Harry Kim of “Star Trek: Voyager.” That’s where “Star Trek: Enterprise” star Anthony Montgomery proved he was a dancing machine on stage, and fellow “Enterprise” star Dominic Keating (Tactical Officer Malcolm Reed) demonstrated his skills at playing a prop guitar.
Hana Hatae, aka Molly O’Brien of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” also went on stage to support brave fans singing their hearts out.
During the convention, speakers are from the various “Star Trek” series, including “Discovery.”
Jason Isaacs, who played the captain of the USS Discovery last season, explained he chose an American accent for his character because Patrick Stewart (Capt. Picard of “The Next Generation”) had already succeeded as a starship captain with a British accent.
Isaacs, who also acted in the Harry Potter movie franchise, spoke to fans in his native British accent.
Later, Walter Koenig talked to fans about how he wished his character, Chekov, had had more to do in the original “Star Trek” TV series, but noted Chekov’s part improved for the movies.
The convention continues through Aug. 5 with appearances by George Takei (Sulu), William Shatner (Capt Kirk), Kate Mulgrew (Capt. Janeway of “Star Trek: Voyager”) and more.
